Sainte Sévère

Is built on a hill overlooking the valley of Indre, it is crossed by the river Indre, and the source is not many kilometres from here. In the 7th century, an abbess named Sévère, founded a monastry here, when she died the villagers, for her kindness and goodness, declared her a Sainte. Her relics were once kept in the church there.

The market place 'Halle' dates back to the 17th century and on a Wednesday morning the square is a bustling place. There is also a country market, held on every other Sunday morning in July and August. In the square, next to the market place, is a Patiserie and Salon de Thé , belonging to Monsieur Thomas Devisscher, with cakes to die for!



The Fortified Gate, dates back to the 15th century and a Calvary (stone cross) from the 16th century



One of the pretty streets to have a wander around. The small town has a doctors, vets, and several bars, a dentist and a pharmacy. The old 18th century castle, belonging to the Villaine family, is now a convalescent home, for the elderly. George Sands, the romantic novelist, [Amandine Aurore Dupin] used this as a setting for her novel 'Mauprat'
